From Leukemia to Kicking Axe

Writer: Jake WatsonJake Watson

At 56 years old, Angela (AJ) Jenson has faced more than her fair share of challenges. A former college basketball player and seasoned coach/personal trainer, she was forced to leave it all behind due to declining health. In 2015, Angela was dealt an even harder blow when she was diagnosed with Leukemia, a devastating diagnosis that left her feeling lost and confused. However, AJ's resilient spirit refused to be extinguished. One fateful day, she was randomly taken to an axe throwing venue, and from that moment on, her life took an unexpected turn. She was immediately hooked by the sport, not just for the physical thrill, but for the incredible community of people she discovered there - a diverse group from all walks of life, united by a shared passion. AJ dove headfirst into honing her axe throwing skills, driven by a newfound sense of purpose. Her hard work and dedication paid off in 2021 when she was named the Best Female Hatchet Thrower, a state-level title in Texas. This was just the beginning, as she went on to qualify for the prestigious World Axe Throwing Championships in Duals in 2022. Despite the ups and downs of her health, AJ's performance continued to impress. In 2024, she finished her first WATL season ranked 31st in the world, a remarkable achievement. Her dream is to make it to the Worlds in the Big Axe event, a testament to her unwavering determination. What's most inspiring about AJ's story, however, is not just her athletic accomplishments, but the supportive community she has found in the "Axe Fam." These true friends, forged through the shared experience of axe throwing, have become a rock-solid foundation for AJ, no matter what challenges she may face with her health. AJ is deeply thankful to God for this network of support and the opportunity to pursue a new passion that has brought her so much joy and fulfillment. Her resilient journey from Leukemia patient to world-class axe thrower is a testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity and find purpose in the most unexpected places. Red Flannel Coffee Company is proud to announce Angela (AJ) Jenson as our first sponsored professional athlete. An athlete who, not only shares our values, but lives them each and every day. Go get it, AJ!
